Solid As A Rock

Piano Solo

One day I was walking past the street where my friend lives. She had just given a talk in sacrament meeting the previous day and as I passed her street I had the thought, “She is solid as a rock!” Just like that, a melody to the words “solid as a rock” popped into my head. I sang it into my phone and then the melody for two more words popped in, “Solid as a rock, and faithful.”

I kept walking and hearing music and singing it into my phone. The next phrases didn’t have any words. When it came to the B section, the words in my head were, “Talented and full of wisdom,” which also fit my friend, and by this time I was also thinking of other “solid” and “talented” women in my life. Even with the two phrases that prompted melodies, I never felt like it was supposed to be a vocal piece—just a stalwart and also lyrical piano piece.

By the time I got home from my walk, the framework was finished. I played it on the piano for the first time and recorded it. I sent a recording of the piece to my friend shortly thereafter for her birthday, but it still needed some tweaking. After several months of playing it for myself and others, I listened to the original recording. I noticed that over time I had changed a few minor elements and that I liked the changes.

I have dedicated this piece to all the solid, faithful, and talented women in my life.
